Additional information for (full-time) prospective and ERASMUS students
Welcome, dear international and exchange students.
We’re excited to welcome you to the University of Stuttgart. This guide will give you an overview of campus life and how courses function, along with helpful contacts in case you have questions or face any issues. You’ll find both general information and details specific to the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering (Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik).
Internationals
A general overview of whether you meet the requirements for studying at a German university or not is given by the DAAD. In addition, you will find more information about studying aerospace engineering as an exchange student in Stuttgart here.
You have probably already noticed that you need to apply online via C@mpus. In case you have questions regarding the application (e.g. because it is unclear which document you should upload), we would like to refer to the Studiensekretariat. Depending on where you are from and where you got your university entrance qualification, they have the right contact person. Additionally, there is a guidance video on how to apply for a Bachelor's program.
Visiting the Homepage of either the University of Stuttgart (regarding guidance for international students) or the Dezernat Internationales (IZ) might be helpful as well. The IZ not only offers a buddy program, but also socializing events and German courses (once you are here). Please also have a look at what the city of Stuttgart offers for international students. There are informational events at the city hall or monthly meetings of the Student Welcome Club Stuttgart where you can connect with other internationals. The Welcome Center Stuttgart provides plenty of further information about coming to and living in Germany in general.
Also, please do not forget to look for accommodation in time (4-5 months in advance). This way, you are more likely to get a room in one of the student residences, definitely the cheaper option compared to private (shared) flats. There are different residences on Campus, in Stuttgart Vaihingen and the city center, which are run by the VSSW or the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart. Do not hesitate to apply as they do not need your enrolment certificate right away.
In case you have other questions, please have a look into our FAQs (Bachelor and Master) or get in touch with us ().
ERASMUS
During your exchange at the University of Stuttgart, you will most often interact with the following groups: the International Center (IZ), the Erasmus Student Network (ESN), the faculty staff, and the FLURUS team, which is the student organization for Aerospace Engineering.
International Office (IZ)
You have probably already had contact with the International Center upon your arrival. They are your main administrative link between your home university and the University of Stuttgart. They support you with general life matters in Stuttgart such as accommodation, health insurance, and administrative procedures. If you are unsure where to find certain information or who to contact, the IZ can usually help or redirect you to the right person.
If you experience personal difficulties such as loneliness or homesickness, don’t hesitate to reach out to them. They are here to help and can connect you with additional support services if needed.
The IZ also organizes an integration period during the Intensive German Course and the course registration phase. This is a great opportunity to meet other students and get oriented. While IZ events become less frequent later in the semester, the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) remains very active throughout.
The Erasmus Student Network (ESN)
The ESN organizes social and cultural events throughout the semester to help you meet international and local students. These include city trips, museum visits, board game nights, sports activities, and more. The first events of the semester are usually organized in collaboration with the IZ and are a great way to get started.
To register for events, visit their website at https://stuttgart.esn-germany.de/events. Some events are free, while others may have a small participation fee.
The Faculty Staff
The Faculty of Aerospace Engineering has a dedicated contact person for international exchange students. This is currently Prof. Dr.-Ing. Markus Leitner. If you have questions about course selection, exams, or your study program, he is the right person to contact. Of course, you can also approach other professors directly with questions about their courses. They are usually happy to help. If you register for a course that is taught in German or if the exam date is after your planned departure from Stuttgart, it is often possible to arrange an oral exam in English (or German) at an earlier date. Be sure to discuss this with your professor well in advance.
FLURUS – Student Association for Aerospace Engineering
FLURUS is the student organization of Faculty 6 (Aerospace Engineering). They are your contact point for faculty-specific questions such as how courses are organized, how the faculty works, and information about technical clubs linked to the faculty. At the start of each semester, FLURUS organizes a welcome meeting for international students. This is a good opportunity to meet other exchange students and learn more about how things work in the faculty. FLURUS also has a WhatsApp group where useful information is shared. You can visit the FLURUS office to be added to the group.
Before the winter term (in summer), there is an Orientation Week organized by FLURUS and the faculty staff. During this week, various events are held to help you choose your courses. Before the summer term (in winter), the orientation period is shorter but still helpful.
FLURUS provides many useful study materials through their website. You can create an account here and link it to your ILIAS account to access documents such as lecture notes and exam preparation resources. These materials are available on the ILIAS platform in the FLURUS LRT module.
You can find more information at https://flurus.de/master/nuetzliches.
We hope you enjoy your time at the University of Stuttgart, learn a lot, and have a wonderful experience. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help if you need it.
